What is medical acupuncture?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine sterile needles into various points in the skin. These needles may then be gently manipulated by hand or have mild electrical stimulation applied. Acupuncture is one aspect of the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a medical system that has its origins more than 2000 years ago in China. Foundational to the practice of Acupuncture is the concept of Qi (pronounced Chee) and loosely translated as ‘energy’. Qi is the fundamental animating energy of life and it is believed that this Qi flows through various channels in the body. The balanced and smooth flow of Qi through the energy channels supports overall health and vitality. Disease is the result of imbalanced flow or obstruction in these energy channels. This energy can be contacted and rebalanced through the stimulation of acupuncture points that run along these channels. Studies have shown that acupuncture changes pain messages sent to the brain. It also causes the nervous system to release natural chemicals that relieve pain and promote healing.

Acupuncture is effective for many acute and chronic pain problems such as low back pain, arthritis, headaches and overuse injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and plantar fasciitis. Acupuncture can also be a supportive treatment in the setting of stress, anxiety, digestive disorders, recurrent respiratory infections, painful periods and neurological concerns (tinnitus etc).

Medical Acupuncture is the practice of Acupuncture by a licensed physician. Dr. Winbush was trained in Medical Acupuncture through the UCLA Medical Acupuncture for Physicians Training Program. Since her initial training over twenty years ago, she continues to attend ongoing education in the areas of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and often incorporates acupuncture treatment into her treatment recommendations for patients.
