What are the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)?

The Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), aka ‘tapping’, is a set of mind-body therapies that combines tapping on specific points of the body with focused attention on a particular issue or body sensation to help release negative emotions and promote emotional and physical healing. The points that you tap on are also powerful acupuncture points, so EFT is also sometimes referred to as ‘acupressure for the emotions’.

As a physician, I support people in making significant and sustainable lifestyle changes. I have found EFT helpful in identifying and addressing limiting beliefs and the emotional charge associated with past negative experiences that can impede successful health behavior change.

EFT is an evidence-based therapy that has shown clinical effectiveness for a variety of physical and mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, phobias, and chronic pain. You can read more about the clinical effectiveness of EFT here.

EFT is generally considered safe and non-invasive. While research on the effectiveness of EFT is still ongoing, I have seen positive results in many of my patients who have tried it. However, it's important to note that EFT should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment, and individuals with serious mental health concerns should consult with a licensed mental health professional before using EFT.

In my practice, I often use EFT as one of several modalities to support people in health behavior change.
